Manjushri is the Bodhisatva of divine wisdom, whose worship confers on the devotee mastery of the dharma, retentive memory, mental perfection and eloquence. He is said to have created the Katmandu valley by cutting through the hills on the southern edge of Nepal lake. He is seated here in the lotus position on a half open lotus, atop a molded base. He wears a brocade dhoti and is profusely adorned with jewelry. His hair is tied down with red strings and set off by a tiara. A sash goes around the back of his neck to his raised right arm which brandishes a sword, one that banishes ignorance and is alight with the fire of knowledge, and the left hand holds the stem of a lotus that supports the Prajnaparmita manuscript. He is the bodhisatva of wisdom and learning.
